About Jürgen Irps
Hailing from Friesland in Northwest Germany, Jürgen Irps has lived most of his life between Portugal, Japan, USA and England as well as during extensive travels throughout China, countries in which he still can be found today. Being constantly exposed to amazing sceneries and moments has turned his interest in Photography into a dedicated endeavour. To capture the full natural view and beauty of the landscapes, and as an engineer, led him to manufacture his own designed panoramic cameras. In the meantime he has adopted digital cameras and editing techniques for a more versatile use.
The photographs of the colourful spring landscapes of the Alentejo have been exhibited numerous times throughout Portugal. The US Embassy in Lisbon invited Jürgen to exhibit his panoramic photographs of Utah’s Canyonland at the University of Lisbon as well at the Cultural Centre in Cascais. His work has also been exhibited in Germany.
A personal note:
I am always moved when I see beautiful landscapes like the colourful rolling hills of the Alentejo in spring, the red rock formations in Utah and Arizona or the beautiful Zen Buddhist Gardens of Kyoto in autumn, but I have rarely been so moved as I was during my many travels through the Southwest of China. The land, the ancient towns and the people are fascinating, especially the province of Yunnan which always stood apart from the rest of China. Within this single province, unmatched in the complex scope of its history, landscape and people, one finds a mix of geography, climates, and people of ethnic minority cultures that elsewhere take entire continents to express.
I was even more overwhelmed when travelling through Tibet, a journey of discovery through some of the most spectacular and remote locations in the world. Unique and rich in cultural tradition, Tibet is a land of a spiritual nature – magnificent Buddhist Monasteries, prayer halls with chanting monks and pilgrims who walk the kora circuits. Tibet’s people have a level of devotion and faith that seems to belong to an ancient world, and this identity they are desperately trying to preserve.
I hope that the diversity of nature, the people and cultures, which I have been visiting, are well reflected within my images.

Vindo de Friesland no noroeste da Alemanha, Jürgen Irps viveu a maior parte de sua vida entre Portugal, Japão, EUA e Inglaterra, bem como nas suas longas viagems através China, países em que ele ainda permanece hoje. Tendo frequentmente exposto a cenários e momentos incríveis transformou seu interesse pela fotografia em um esforço dedicado. Para captar a visão natural e a beleza das paisagems e, por isso, como engenheiro, levou-o a projectar e a construir as suas própias câmeras panorâmicas. Entretanto, ele adoptou as câmeras digitais e técnicas de edição para um uso mais versátil.
As fotografías das paisagems coloridas na primavera das terras do Alentejo foram expostos várias vezes ao longo de Portugal. A Embaixada dos EUA em Lisboa convidou Jürgen para expor suas fotografías panorâmicas de Canyonland do estado de Utah na Universidade de Lisboa, no Centro Cultural de Cascais e em Tavira. O seu trabalho também já foi exibido na Alemanha.
Uma nota pessoal:
Estou sempre emocionado quando vejo belas paisagens, como os campos ondulados coloridos do Alentejo na Primavera, as formações de rocha vermelha da Utah e Arizona ou as maravilhas jardims do Zen Buddhismo em Kyoto no outono, mas raramente fiquei tão comovido como nas minhas muitas viagems no sudoeste da China. As paisagens, cidades históricas, e as pessoas que lá vivem são fascinante, especialmente na província de Yunnan, que sempre ocupou uma posição especial na China. Dentro desta única província, sem igual no âmbito complexo de sua história, a paisagem e as pessoas, encontrar-se uma mistura de geografia, climas, e pessoas de culturas de minorias étnicas que em outros lugares levam continentes inteiros para expressar.
Fiquei ainda mais impressionado quando viajei pelo Tibete, uma viagem de descoberta por alguns dos locais mais espectaculares e remotos do mundo. Uma cultura original e rica em tradições e monumentos sagrados, o Tibete é uma terra de natureza espiritual - magníficos mosteiros buddhistas, salas de orações com monges cantando, e peregrinos percorrendo os circuitos do Kora. Os tibetanos têm um nível de devoção e fé que parece pertencer a um mundo antigo, e é esta identidade que estão desesperadamente a tentar preservar.
Que todas as minhas imagens possam expressar a diversidade da natureza, do povo e da cultura que estive visitar.

Jürgen Irps stammt aus Friesland in Nordwest Deutschland, und hat die meiste Zeit seines Lebens in Portugal, Japan, den USA und England verbracht, sowie während längeren Reisen durch China; Länder, in denen er sich auch heute noch aufhält. Um die Momente und fantastischen Umgebungen aufzunehmen die ihm dort begegneten, begann er sich mehr Zeit der Fotographie zu widmen. Um den natürlichen Blickwinkel einer Landschaft aufnehmen zu können, führte ihm als Ingenieur zur Entwicklung und Bau seiner eigenen Panoramakameras. Inzwischen verwendet er digitale Kameras und Bearbeitungsprozesse um die gewünschten Ergebnisse zu erzielen.
Die Aufnahmen der Frühlinglandschaften des Alentejo sind inzwischen mehrfach in Portugal ausgestellt worden. Auf Einladung der US-Botschaft in Lissabon wurden seine Panorama-Fotografien von Utahs Canyonland an der Universität in Lissabon sowie im Kulturzentrum von Cascais ausgestellt. Seine Fotografien wurden auch in Deutschland gezeigt.
Eine persönliche Bemerkung:
Ich bin immer emotionell bewegt wenn ich eine unbeschreiblich schöne Landschaft sehe wie die farbenfrohen hügeligen Felder des Alentejo im Frühling, den roten Felsformationen in Utah und Arizona oder den wunderschönen Gärten der Zen Buddhismus Tempel in Kyoto im Herbst, aber ich war selten so überwältigt wie während meiner vielen Reisen durch den Südwesten Chinas. Die Landschaften, die historischen Ortschaften und die Menschen die dort leben sind faszinierend, insbesondere in der Provinz Yunnan, die schon immer eine besondere Stellung in China innehatte. In dieser einzigen Provinz, unübertroffen im komplexen Bereich der Geschichte, Landschaft und Bevölkerung findet man eine Mischung aus Geographie, Klima und Menschen ethnischer Kulturen, die anderswo nur ganze Kontinente zum Ausdruck bringen können.
Ich war weitaus stärker überwältigt als ich durch Tibet reiste, eine Entdeckungsreise durch einige der spektakulärsten und abgelegensten Orte in der Welt. Einzigartig und reich an kulturelle Traditionen und heiligen Denkmälern ist Tibet ein Land von spiritueller Natur – prachtvolle buddhistische Klöster und ihren Gebetshallen mit dem Singsang der Mönche sowie den auf den Koras wandernden Pilgern. Tibets Menschen haben ein Maß an Hingabe und Frömmigkeit, die zu einer alten Welt zu gehören scheint, und diese Identität versuchen sie verzweifelt zu bewahren.
Möge die Vielfalt der Natur, der Menschen und ihrer Kultur, die ich besucht habe, durch meine Bilder zum Ausdruck gebracht werden.
